The First European Retrospective Exhibition of Alexander McQueen’s Work

To remember the work of one of the most incredible designers ever, Alexander McQueen, which committed suicide on the 11 February 2010, the Victoria & Albert Museum is now showcasing a new exhibition entitled Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, from the 14 March until the 2 August.
Known for his original and unique style, he always tried to use contemporary organic materials, like shells and feathers, in his works. He’s main influences where the natural elements, the grotesque and the artists and painters from the fifteenth and sixteenth-century, which reinforced his romantic taste. This was quite perceptible, and loved, during his most famous (and beautiful) shows, like The Widows of Culloden(Autumn/Winter 2006) and, his last show, Platos Atlantis (Spring/Summer 2010).

The retrospective exhibition spans his works from 1994, when we was still an MA graduate in Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, until his unfinished Autumn/Winter 2010 collection and the works are being displayed with the same energy and dramatic spectacle that characterized so much his runway shows.
Born and raised in London, he always left the city bring new inspiration and ideas to his work and professional life. He once said, “London’s where I was brought up. It’s where my heart is and where I get my inspiration”. There wasn’t any other perfect place in Europe to settle up a retrospective exhibition of McQueen’s world than London.
Some of the famous guests that attended the opening of the show were David Beckham, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Katie England, Salma Hayek, among others.
The Victoria & Albert Museum, in partnership with Swarovski and Samsung, is now the first European host of the largest exhibition remembering Alexander McQueen’s work. It was first seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in 2011, organized by the American Costume Institute.
